The Battle of Borodino, fought on 7 September 1812, was one of the most intense and symbolic clashes of the Napoleonic Wars. Near the village of Borodino, the Grande Armée led by Napoleon Bonaparte faced the Russian forces commanded by General Mikhail Kutuzov.
The Russians had prepared strong defensive positions with earthworks and fortified lines, while the French launched repeated assaults using infantry, cavalry, and artillery. The fighting was fierce and costly on both sides. Although Napoleon managed to take the battlefield, the Russian army was not destroyed and withdrew in an orderly way toward Moscow.
This dramatic encounter became a symbol of Russian resilience and of the heavy price paid during the 1812 campaign.
The chess set inspired by Borodino brings these historic figures back to life—commanders, soldiers, and artillerymen—transforming the chessboard into a miniature reminder of one of the most famous battles of the 19th century.
