Description

Akiba Rubinstein has added extensively to our enjoyment of modern chess. Not only are his games exciting and instructive in themselves, but they also introduced to the chess world some highly original variations in opening play. For instance, it was Rubinstein who developed one of the best answers known to the Four Knights opening. (Indeed, this answer all but banished the opening from serious play.) The Rubinstein variation of the Queen's Gambit Declined brought him resounding wins over Capablanca and other great masters. And in later years, the Polish master continued to add to the depth and variety of chess with his new attacks and defences.

In play, too, as well as in theory, Rubinstein was a leader. He holds one of the most amazing records of chess history: five first prizes in international competition within a period of 12 months! The year was 1912, and the games included victories over the greatest chess players of the day.

In this book, Hans Kmoch has selected and annotated 100 of the best games of Rubinstein's career, illustrating his theories and favorite methods of play against such chess immortals as Alekhine, Capablanca, Euwe, Janowski, Kashdan, Lasker, Marshall, Nimzowitch, Tarrasch, Vidmar and many others. Kmoch's notes on these games are always clear, detailed and instructive; whether you are an amateur or an expert, you cannot help but improve your game by reading these analyses of Rubinstein's techniques.

Aside from his thorough mastery of opening and middle game, Rubinstein was famous for his faultless technique in the endgame, particularly Rook and Pawn endings. In some of these superb endings his initial advantage was so minute that his victories verged on the miraculous. And yet, when the occasion seemed to call for it, Rubinstein could switch from careful positional play to the most daring combinations with equal success, as the exciting games in this book testify.
