The first part of three-volume manual is addressed to those who want to learn on their own to play chess, and perfect themselves. A lesson by lesson method of presenting the material, as well as numerous exercises, favorous the consistent learning of the rules and laws that are basis of a chess school. An extensive educational material is collected in the book, and presented in accordance with the modern pedagogical principles. The aim of the volume one of this manual is to prepare players with the ELO rating up to 1800. The book may be used for studies in groups, too, because it embraces the material of the existing programs of the first year of training in chess schools for children and teen-agers.
