Description

For this book Dr. S. Tartakower and J. du Mont have selected 100 of the best master games from the late 1930’s to the early 1950’s. The productions of 124 different players, these games exhibit outstanding play and many important opening innovations. Indeed, to make this book most useful, the authors have arranged the games according to opening categories: Open Games like the Ruy Lopez and King’s Gambit; Semi-Open Games such as the French Defense and Sicilian Defense; and Closed Games, including the Queen’s Gambit and several Indian Defenses; plus many other openings in each of the three sections—38 different openings in all.

The 100 games include games by Smyslov, Najdorf, Alexander, Evans, Flohr, Gligoric, Geller, among others; immortal games by Botvinnik and Keres, including Botvinnik-Reshevsky (World Championship, 1948), Botvinnik-Capablanca (Avro, 1938), Euwe-Keres (Match, 1940) and Keres-Mikenas (U.S.S.R. Championship, 1947); and six masterpieces by Bronstein which are alone worth the price of the book; these include Bronstein-Boleslavsky (Match, 1950), Brostein-Keres (Candidates’ Tournament, 1950) and Bronstein-Botvinnik (World Championship, 1951). An introduction to each game describes the nature of the struggle to follow and points out those games of the highest theoretical value.

The authors, strong players in their own right and superb writers, supply original annotations that throw fresh light on each of the games. Together with the fine selection of games, these annotations make this book one that belongs in every chess player’s library.

Unabridged, unaltered republication of the original (1955) edition. 57 miniature games hidden in the notes. 103 diagrams. Index of players. xv + 171pp. 5⅜ x 8½. Paperbound.
